Blockbuster movies were way better than expected in 2024, so 2025 will have high expectations. While most of the good franchises will not be releasing films this year, there are many movies to look forward to.

Captain America: Brave New World (February 14th)

This film stems from the Disney+ Series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. It continues the story of Isaiah Bradley, the Korean War veteran and super soldier who was experimented on for decades. The relationship between Sam Wilson and Thaddeus Ross (now played by Harrison Ford) will be tested as Sam may once again have to move against a government agenda.

This film has a couple of ways it can go. It can follow the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and expose government corruption, or it can be a political statement proclaiming the federal government as a racist organization and making Isaiah Bradley an example of it. Either way, Marvel fans will be glad to see Anthony Mackie back as Captain America and Harrison Ford's Marvel debut.

A Minecraft Movie (April 8th)

Films about video games are in right now. A Minecraft Movie will be an example of that. Minecraft is one of the most popular video games, if not the most popular, in the world. Every major gaming YouTube and Twitch gamer has played Minecraft at some point during their career.

Now, Minecraft has made it to the big screen and has some major names associated with it. Jack Black and Jason Momoa are involved, so you know it will be wild. The trailers are promoting a comedic adventure, and it looks pretty funny on its face. I don't think it will be the best video game-inspired film ever, but it might be worth the watch.

Thunderbolts* (May 2nd)

Marvel has been teasing this one for a long time. Several of their films and Disney Plus shows have had cut scenes that tie in, starting with the end credits scene in "Black Widow." Yelena Belova, adoptive sister to Natasha Romanoff, has been recruited by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Allegra de Fontaine also appeared in "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" on Disney+ to recruit John Walker, Steve Rogers' original replacement. We'll also see the return of Yelena's adoptive father, Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian), and Antonia Dreykov (Taskmaster). Steve Rogers' best friend, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, is the man in charge of putting this operation together.

This is shaping up to be a Guardians-type film, with Bucky and Yelena serving as the one-two punch while the rest of the crew makes the movie even more hilarious. I think this Marvel film will be the best of the year.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (May 23rd)

There are a lot of questions regarding this film. Will this be the last time we see Ethan Hunt on the big screen? How will Ethan Hunt defeat the Entity in the end? What is the rest of the story surrounding Ethan and Grace's relationship? What else is in store for Mission: Impossible going forward? All these questions need to be answered in this film.

Regardless, Tom Cruise is somehow at the peak of his career when he wasn't expected to be. Lately, his best films have been Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two, and Top Gun: Maverick. These films had sensational reviews from critics, so Tom Cruise movies are becoming the most reliable in film right now.

How to Train Your Dragon (June 13th)

After seemingly wrapping up the franchise in 2019, Universal has decided that a live-action remake of the iconic Dreamworks film is needed right now. While I'm not sure it is, I'm not against seeing the studio that brought us Jurassic Park move from bringing live dinosaurs to the big screen to bringing live dragons to the big screen.

This may be what Universal needs to get back into the top five of the box offices every year. How to Train Your Dragon was an iconic franchise that inspired the television series "Dragons" and did not have a bad movie. To go live-action with it was inevitable, but the only thing working against this film is that Universal is rushing things. How To Train Your Dragon came out in 2010, and the live-action remake is now coming only 15 years later. I would have waited at least 20-25 years to cater to the next generation, but that's just me.

F1 (June 27th)

Formula One racing is even more popular than NASCAR or IndyCar racing. Who knew that was coming? Seeing the sport move to the big screen is a huge accomplishment. Brad Pitt stars in the sports movie of the year as a former F1 driver who retired after a career-ending crash and comes out of retirement as a mentor.

While the sport isn't as well-known, the movie might be worth watching. Mentorship roles in sports movies can be some of the most iconic, and when you have Brad Pitt on the job, you might have something special. I like what I'm seeing here.

Jurassic World Rebirth (July 2nd)

The Jurassic World series has gone back to the drawing board and started over. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are not coming back (I know they're in the trailers, but they're not slated to be in the main cast), and a whole new cast has been selected for this film. The main character is another Marvel Star, Scarlett Johansen. This only means one thing: Jurassic World is ditching the comedy and the cordial and getting serious.

Scarlett Johansen is a drop-dead gorgeous femme fatale whose reputation as Black Widow also signifies kicking butt. She's a perfect lead for a jungle exploration film. Additionally, the film takes very little from the events of the previous two Jurassic World movies. That should make creating a new storyline much easier. Let's hope Universal knows what they're doing with all this great potential.

Superman (July 11th)

After the DC Extended Universe failed to bring us decent versions of its most iconic characters, Warner Brothers has restarted and recast the roles in different franchises. The little-known David Corenswet stars as the Man of Steel in this 2025 version of Superman. Going back to the drawing board is precisely what needed to happen with some of the most iconic franchises out there. None of them required that more than the Superman franchise.

Let's hope that Warner Brothers can bring us back to 1978 and make us believe that a man can fly in this film. The best thing that they did was bring James Gunn along for the ride. After the fall out between Gunn and Marvel, he's been a major asset to DC Comics. Maybe he can put them back on the map. Everyone should be anticipating this film.

Freakier Friday (August 8th)

Lindsay Lohan is back for a sequel to her iconic 2003 film "Freaky Friday." The main cast will be returning, highlighted by Jamie Lee Curtis and Mark Harmon. Some annoyed fans will believe a remake is unnecessary and will ruin the original, so the movie needs to be good. The cast is already ahead of the ball game. Mark Harmon and Jamie Lee Curtis have worked together numerous times, including on a season of Harmon's TV crime drama "NCIS."

The big question mark will be the return of Lindsay Lohan to stardom. The iconic actress has had more than her fair share of controversy over the last couple of decades and a return to acting seemed unlikely until now. Lohan's return may be her best shot to reconstruct her acting career and become the star we all thought she would be. We'll see how it goes for her.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (December 5th)

Scott Cawthon's iconic video game franchise took over the internet in 2014. By 2016, the franchise was releasing its fifth installment, "Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location." The game franchise expanded so fast and became so popular that a film series about the games was inevitable with the emergence of video game movies. Last year, right before Halloween, that film was released. Just before Christmas, another Five Nights at Freddy's film will be released this year, based on the game "Five Nights at Freddy's 2."

A few things that we know about the movie are based on the games. First of all, the movie will probably be a prequel because FNAF 2 was also a prequel. Secondly, the film will likely set up a third film. More importantly, the film will probably give us more insight into what actually happened to Mike's brother and how Afton found Mike in the first place. There might be some pretty big secrets that unfold in this one. I like this movie's chances.
